I call it "Summer Mode" and I see it every year with clients, professional connections, and yes- myself. It usually manifests as a combination of decreased focus and productivity, increased procrastination, and even some laziness. My theory is that it stems from the school year we were conditioned to; it's so ingrained in us and our culture that we take a break, that we deserve time off, plus we want to be outside soaking up the sunshine. This tendency, coupled with more outdoor social gatherings like graduations, golf tournaments, and sporting events, means lots of us are spending less time in the office. Are you at risk of a summer plateau? (Do you care right now?)
Let's face it: most of us are prone to less office time in the Summer. Rather than succumbing to it, experiencing a plateau or reduced results in business, and feeling guilty--I suggest embracing it, making your shorter office hours more productive, and living more life in your non-office hours!
1. Be more intentional with "Summer Mode"- consider your most important priorities for this month, or this season. You may find that personal objectives are equal to or even trump some business objectives. Be strategic with your time and energy, and make it your best Summer yet.
2. Consider creative ways to get more work done in less time, or in varying locations other than your office. Check out apps and other tools that solve productivity challenges and allow you to work from anywhere (make sure you can implement them quickly/easily so you don't add to your work time).
3. Don't fall for the myth of multi-tasking. Not only is it being shown to be less effective when made a habit, it's also often rude. Humans don't really "multi-task" so you'd be better served by using techniques to help you focus for bursts of time to get your most important work done. I like setting a timer for 20 minutes and seeing where it leads you. Also, try the model from Tony Schwartz & The Energy Project: work up to 90 minutes of concentrated/focused work, then take a break.
4. ENJOY it! Once your professional obligations are taken care of, give yourself permission to relax, have fun, get away- whatever it is that will make your Summer fantastic. Better yet, schedule it in and make it happen. PS- remember the sunscreen!
To your continued success,
