12 Days of Apps: LINKEDIN

LinkedIn has been described by many as Facebook for business, but it's fair to say that's not fully accurate. Besides a way to express personality, connect with others, and show career history and highlights, it's also an opportunity to showcase one's professional possibility and to make a unique business contribution through valued content.

The key difference, obviously, is that the idea is to be PROFESSIONAL about all of it, including being truthful, earnest, and respectful.  Facebook, much as I do appreciate it, is not any of these things for a noticeable chunk of users.
Unfortunately, many people are missing the LinkedIn opportunity .  In my opinion, anyone working today who values their career or business at all should seriously consider having at least a basic profile on LinkedIn and connecting with other professionals in their circle of contacts.

See my previous post with Three Tips for a better LinkedIn profile.

A few other thoughts:
  • NO profile on LinkedIn may be as professionally damaging to some people as a bad (unprofessional) profile.
  • Networking via LinkedIn is valuable, but should be generally considered a supplement to or component of good relationship-building strategies.
  • The time to network is BEFORE one is out of a job, not as a result of a layoff or firing...
  • Participate regularly by posting something useful or interesting for your network contacts, but steer clear of all the same stuff that is inappropriate on the job.
